Kona Kai
Kona Kai is a special fellow. A shelter volunteer was walking a dog when a truck drove by and threw a dog out onto the road. The dog stumbled around looking lost and disoriented. When another shelter volunteer went to check on the dog they saw all of the wounds on his body. He had obviously been beaten. He was also blind! Both eyes had ruptured and were covered with puss. Yet, Kona Kai didn't react aggressively, nor try to get away when the volunteer came up to him. The volunteer carried him back to the shelter office and another volunteer loaded him into the car and took him straight to the veterinarian. They treated the wounds that appeared to have been made with a large sharp object. Because the eyes had sealed over and not drained out, they started him on several medications to reduce the amount of infection. The plan was to stabilize him before doing the surgery to remove the damaged eyes. However, dedicated volunteers spent hours every day instilling various drops, giving oral medications and creating a dark pen where Kona Kai could heal. Several trips to different veterinarians resulted in a miracle. Although he will likely always be blind, he will not lose his eyes! He still needs some treatment, but soon he will be completely healed and ready to start the next chapter in his life.

Kona Kai is surprisingly confident. Instead of hiding in a corner or clinging to a person, he marches confidently ahead. In fact you have to watch out for him so he doesn't run into things. Once he is fully healed, we hope he will have a canine buddy who can help him maneuver the world. And we really hope he will have someone to love him and give him the positive attention he craves and deserves.
